American state Colorado went down in history as the first state in the U.S. which allowed the sale of cannabis in stores, starting from 1 January.

It is expected that about 30 stores across Colorado will start with selling this drug for recreational purposes, reports the BBC.

People will be able to smoke cannabis, or marijuana, only in private premises with the permission of the owner.

Under the new law, cannabis will be sold like alcohol - the citizens of Colorado will be able to buy a maximum of 28,349 grams (one ounce), while those who are not residents of the state will be able to buy a quarter ounce, or a little more than seven grams of the drug.

Sale of cannabis will also be taxed in the same way as alcohol, and state officials expect that this will bring revenues worth millions, of which the first $40 million will be used for the construction of schools.

A total of 135 stores have got permits to sell marijuana, most of which are located in the capital and the largest city of ColoradoDenver, while some communities in other parts of this state haven’t acquired the right to have such action.

On 21 novembar 2012,along with the State of Colorado, Washington also voted for the legalization of use and possession of cannabis for people older than 21 years. It is expected, however, that the state of Washington will allow sale of cannabis later this year.

Colorado and Washington are among 20 states that have approved the use of marijuana for medical purposes while according to federal law, this drug is still illegal.

Supporters of the legalization of cannabis have welcomed the move of Colorado, expressing hope that other states will follow suit, while critics warned that this sends the wrong message to youth and they are afraid that it will lead to serious health and social problems.
