Twitch, Amazon's video game streaming service, said on Thursday that it more than doubled its monthly unique viewers to 100 million, up from 45 million at the same time last year.
- 16 Billion minutes watched per month
- 100 Million unique viewers per month
- 1.5 Million unique broadcasters per month
- 11 Million total videos broadcast per month
- 10.000 total partnered Channels
- 1 Million peak concurrent viewers in 2014
You can see the most impressive milestones in the stats above, and check out the full 2014 report on Twitch's website. If nothing else, it helps to explain why Amazon, which bought the company in August of last year, thought it was worth $1 billion.
Earlier this month, Twitch introduced Twitch Music, a library of 500 of pre-cleared, mostly EDM songs that streamers can use without having to worry about copyright infringement.
To give you an idea how big the phenomena of watching video game play is, in October 2013, 32 million people watched the championship tournament of "League of Legends" on various streaming services like Twitch and YouTube. That's more than the number of people who watched the TV series finales for "Breaking Bad," "24″ and "The Sopranos" combined, according to the Wall Street Journal.
European Infrastructure Expansion
Twitch doubled its edge capacity in 2014. This expansion was accomplished through a combination of opening new sites in Paris and London, as well as increasing server and network capacity in Ashburn (Washington, DC), Los Angeles, Dallas, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, and San Francisco. The network infrastructure is now capable of sending more stream power outside of US.
These statistics speaks a lot about the popularity of watching the games:
Jan 2013 - 6 Billion minutes watched per month
Jan 2014 - 7.5 Billion minutes watched per month
Dec 2014 - 12 Billion minutes watched per month
