You decided that you are sick of your profession and you would like to change it, but you are not sure how to do it? Here are a few tips to make a successful transition from one career to another.

Changing a career can be a very hard experience for people, and it doesn’t fit for all personalities. For example, I write blogs on GLBrain, but I am also a physiotherapist and a masseur, and occasional online English teacher. So that kind of puts me in a space of people who are more adaptable and can switch careers. If you are somewhat like that than you know you can do it. But the question is: how do I do it?

Go Slow

You may not be happy with your job, but it pays the bills. It would be an irresponsible move to just leave it and think that you can start your dream job tomorrow. Do all the necessary research about your new profession and make the transition slowly. You may have to work less hours, study in the evening, learn new skills but if you are doing it so that you can reach your dream job it’s manageable. Try to do it in a way that you avoid entry level pay and make sure that your force of will beats all obstacles, because there will be many down this road.

Believe

There is nothing that can throw you faster of the rails as self-doubt. You just have to be convinced that you can do it, no matter how hard the road in front of you is. Because down this road of struggle, you have to learn how to think and act outside your comfort zone to achieve your end goal. Sure, it can be a lot simpler than that if you want to do some simple career change or something already half-way related to what you do. Than all the experience you have in this area can be used to improve your chances of getting a good job.

Be Mindful

You might think that your new career will bring you joy, but make sure you think the details. What will you most likely do every day? What will your working environment be? How many people are going to be over your head? You just need to be honest with yourself and have the end goal in your mind. Even if it takes years to reach it, make a plan on how can you do it and don’t let anything stop you.

Connect

If your dream is to work at some X company, make sure you contact and connect with people who already work there. Let them share their experience of the job, treatment and all the details that can prove valuable to your during your switching period. It would be a real bummer if you make a career change and it ends up making you even more miserable, right? Don’t contact just people that are working only at the position you desire, but also those who work other in the company. There are many things you can learn long before your first interview.

Act

Sure, it will take time to leave your profession and do something else, but always make sure you act in the direction of your decision. Read more, learn more, do more, talk more, connect more, just act so that you make even baby steps toward your goal. It will keep your energy levels high and make you happy and positive about your future.

Adjust

Maybe your dream job is exactly what you want, but during your transition, things can become clear and lead you down different paths. Maybe you want to be a fitness coach, but you end up a gym manager or something. It’s OK to change your goals as long as you have them and they take you somewhere.
