Over the years, the professionals in the cyber community, responsible for global security, have prevented various bug attacks and threats from wrecking havoc. In addition to that, they need to presently fight off the Heartbleed bug.
Heartbleed
So, what is special about the Heartbleed bug? Heartbleed is a security bug in the open source SSL library of cryptography. This is a great vulnerability in the SSL/TLS communication security and privacy over the Internet for applications which include emails, social networks, Instant messaging and even the Virtual public Networks most commonly known as VPN.
Why is Heartbleed a threat?
One of the major reasons why Heartbleed is seen as a major threat is because, it allows anyone in the internet to read and access the protected and encrypted versions of the OpenSSL software . This in turn also affects the private and the public key encryption of the service providers and allows the attackers to eavesdrop on the communications, extract data from the systems without any hassle directly and to impersonate users and organizations. Since the private and public key encryption is no longer a protective measure, hence the digital signature of the users can be accessed from any part of the globe by anyone, which in itself is a threat to the common users of internet.
How to stop the effects of Heartbleed?
The heartbleed has shown the cyber community the need to upgrade to modern technology and protection measures instead of using the old encryptions. Hence, if the old and vulnerable version of OpenSSL is in place, it will be prone to attacks from Heartbleed and other forms of attackers in the cyber world.
Fixed Open SSL is released and can be considered as an effective measure to fight of Heartbleed virus. Vendors of the Operating system and the cloud services also need to take effective steps in helping their customers overcome the threat of cyber attack. Users should also take preventive measures and active steps once the fix becomes available for all.
Hence, Heartbleed is a bug which has been just born in the cyber community, yet has the potential to wreck havoc if not stopped early.
