Pit-bulls continue to be at the centre of bad publicity in the media, depicting them as killers. News headlines around the world and especially in the USA has portrayed this sweet dog as a beast which has led to its ban in domestic homes in many parts of the world. This is mainly as a result of poor dog handling and owners who don’t take care of their dogs. This can happen to any dog species if proper care isn’t shown to the dog. Continued scenes in movies and music videos has also contributed to this notion as many will portray this dog as a beast and a sign of ‘badness’ in there videos with so as to be seen as gangsters and hostile.
The pit-bull is however not the only dog in history that has been at the receiving end of the media’s misplaced misconception. In the 70’s, the Doberman was the dog to dread and it was portrayed as a killer and was banned in most states. In the 80’s, the Rottweiler fell victim and the media was all over it. It was now safe to keep a Doberman but not a Rottweiler, yet it was the same dog that received mass criticism a few years before. And now, the once sweet spoken dog, the pitbull is paying this price.
Only when you get to understand this dog will you understand that it’s the sweetest dog that you can own. It is not a complete lie that the pit-bull is a ferocious. Cases have been reported of pit-bulls attacking humans and sometimes killing them, however some of the cases reported are usually not pure pit-bulls. This is as a result of poor dog handling and I blame it on bad handlers who keep dogs for the wrong reasons. Handlers who mistreat these dogs and don’t socialize them enough. Any dog that isn’t properly trained and taken care of will end up being a danger even to its owner, not just the pit-bull.
Another reason for this bad image is the unpopular dog fighting. Dog fights mostly feature pit-bulls and this has also contributed to tainting its image.
The pit-bull is among the cutest dog and its strength, intelligence and guard is unmatched. It is a misconception that secluding your dog makes it a good guard dog. Dogs will have guarding instincts to its family and its handler’s family and property if well taken care of regardless of whether it is secluded or not..
It is time to change this misconception through continued information on the handling of the pit bull and any other dog.
I own two pit bulls and they always make me smile. They are very play full and are considerably good with kids. I have socialized them with other animals as they have a trait to be aggressive to other animals. This should be done from the time they are puppies. They are also people friendly but be warned that it will attach any stranger who gets to my property when I am not around making it a good guard dog. I have also trained it to accept people who I bring to my home and will never be aggressive to anyone when I am around. I can also walk it out without a leash but I have to look out for other dogs as the pit-bull is quite strong and will fight any strange dogs. This is just how the dog is naturally and I do understand that so I always take caution and will sometimes have it on a leash just to be safe. I don’t blame the dog but the owners who continue to mishandle this great dog.
A dog is a product of its owner. The media should blame the dog owners, not victimizing the dog’s, it’s just an animal that survives on animal instincts.
