“The Ministry of Health will not prohibit the introduction into medicine of anything that gives results in treatment, as well as marijuana. We have a variety of studies that have shown that cannabis had good results in medicine. Surely we will not run away from something that has effects. However, we do not want to make something overnight. We want to introduce all citizens what this is all about” - says Health Minister Zlatibor Lončar.
Serbian humanitarian organization "Lekalizuj" has launched an initiative for amending the Law on the use of cannabis for medical purposes, in relation to contemporary developments of medical science.
Cannabis has been used for thousands of years in traditional medicine, and its beneficial effects in relieving the symptoms of a range of serious diseases (multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, AIDS and various types of cancer) have been proven.
Doctors in Serbia agree that marijuana could be legalized, but only dosed, and only for medical purposes as an opiate. Vladimir Kovcin, oncologist says that cannabinoid - one of the 60 substances of marijuana can help patients with incurable diseases. “It cannot cure but can improve quality of life of the patient, can improve mood, increase appetite and reduce pain” - says Kovcin.
On September 27, in Belgrade was organized panel discussion for the legalization of marijuana for medical purposes, Rick Simpson, one of the greatest fighters in the world for this idea and the man who has cured more than 5,000 people with cannabis oil arrived in the Serbian capital in order to participate in this discussion and share his experiences.
Besides legendary Rick Simpson, Robert J. Melamede - Professor of the Department of Biology from the University of Colorado, then the Canadian researcher doctor Paul Hornby, and guest from the Czech Republic Lumír Ondřej Hanus also participated in the discussion.
