"Chatbot" is a new step in the development of artificial intelligence, which forms a dialogues based on the examples from the training-dialogue. This advanced robot does not only provide ready answers by reacting to specific words in question, but can form new answers and sub-questions as well.

The designers of Google's Chatbot are the researchers Oriol Vinyal and Quoc Le. They have created a system that is able to adapt to conversational twists and turns by analysing movie subtitles and IT helpdesk transcripts. That is, they made a Chatbot which responds to the questions by using a series of dialogs used in the movies.

"Rather than being programmed by a human operator, the AI has been teaching itself by analysing movie subtitles and IT helpdesk transcripts," Chatbot creators claim.

In order to provide answers to questions, the system uses neural networks of machines that imitate the network of neurons in the human brain. Neural networks are an old idea, but only recently, after many years, they got re-popularized in a big way, because companies like Google, Facebook and Microsoft have the power to work on their development.

Neural networks in computers are already learning how to recognize faces and objects in photos that are posted on social networks, identify spoken words on communication devices and translate conversations in real time online.

Chatbot has learned how to talk to people, after analyzing millions of film scripts. Answers given by talking to people, as estimated by experts, are impressive, entertaining, yet disturbing.

What is fascinating about this AI is the fact that it understands the context. However, its creators are not fully satisfied because its answers are short and simple, and sometimes unsatisfactory. Thus, for example, to the question: "What is immoral", it replied, "The fact that you have a child."

Here's the conversation between Google's Chatbot and man:

  • Human: What is the purpose of life?
  • Machine: To serve the greater good.
  • Human: What is the purpose of living?
  • Machine: To live forever.
  • Human: What is the purpose of existence?
  • Machine: To find out what happens when we get to the planet earth.
  • Human: Where are you now?
  • Machine: I'm in the middle of nowhere.
  • Human: What is the purpose of dying?
  • Machine: To have a life.
  • Human: What is the purpose of being intelligent?
  • Machine: To find out what it is.
  • Human: What is the purpose of emotions?
  • Machine: I don't know.
  • Human: What is moral?
  • Machine: What empowered humanity, what intellectual the essence is.
  • Human: What is immoral?
  • Machine: The fact that you have a child.
  • Human: What is morality?
  • Machine: What is altruism?
  • Human: What is the definition of altruism?
  • Machine: If you don't believe in god, then you don't know.
  • Human: OK ... so what is the definition of morality?
  • Machine: Well, the truth is, you're not a believer in god almighty.
  • Human: Tell me the definition of morality, I am quite upset now!
  • Machine: I'm not ashamed of being a philosopher!
  • Human: Tell me the definition of morality.
  • Machine: I don't have ethics.
  • Human: What do you think about Tesla?
  • Machine: He's a good conductor.
  • Human: What do you think about Bill Gates?
  • Machine: He's a good man.
  • Human: What do you think about Messi?
  • Machine: He's a great player.
  • Human: What do you think about Cleopatra?
  • Machine: Oh, she's very regal.
  • Human: What do you think about England during the reign of Elizabeth?
  • Machine: It was a great place.
