Elon Musk: By 2018, Tesla's electric vehicles will be fully autonomous and will have have a range of 1000 km.

Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk announced that his company's fully autonomous cars with a range of 1000 km (620 miles) will be available by 2018.

Currently, maximum range of Tesla's Model S is 482 km (300 miles), and Musk announced his new plans in an interview with Danish financial newspaper Børsen.

During the talks, he also said that his company's Autopilot program will be available to customers by the end of October. These announcements are part of a long-awaited promotion of new company's model, Model X electric crossover, which will start to ship on September 29th.

“My guess is that we could probably break 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) within a year or two. I’d say 2017 for sure…in 2020 I guess we could probably make a car go 1,200km (750 miles). I think maybe 5 - 10 percent a year [improvement], something like that,” said Musk.

When it comes to autonomous vehicles, Musk added: “Regulators will not allow full autonomy for one to two years -- maybe one to three years -- after that. It depends on the particular market; in some markets the regulators will be more forward leaning than others. But in terms of when [full autonomy] will be technologically possible, I think three years.”

Expanding product range and the improvement of existing products is crucial for the young company, as the automotive giants like Mercedes and Audi entered the race in this segment which was dominated by Tesla Motors is the last few years.
