The most popular game and eSport today.

League of Legends or short Lol is multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA), also known as lords management (LOMA) or action real-time strategy (ARTS), is a sub-genre of the real-time strategy (RTS) genre, in which often two teams of players compete with each other in discrete games, with each player controlling a single character through an RTS-style.

League of Legends is video game developed and published by Riot Games for Microsoft Windows and macOS. The game follows a freemium model and is supported by microtransactions, and was inspired by the Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne mod, Defense of the Ancients.

What is the genre of HoN/DotA/LoL?

On October 21, 2009, League of Legends entered Open Beta, where anyone could try out the game. Open Beta only lasted 1 week, ending on October 27, 2009 when League of Legends was officially launched.

In order to play League of Legends, you'll need a:

-Computer (Windows or MAC)
-High-speed internet connection
-Keyboard and Mouse

Depending on the game type, each mode will require different amounts of time. They are as follows:

Summoner's Rift: 30-45 minutes
Twisted Treeline: 20-30 minutes
Dominion/Crystal Scar: 15-25 minutes
ARAM: 20-30 minutes

League of Legends was generally well received at releas, with an active and expansive fanbase. By July 2012, League of Legends was the most played PC game in North America and Europe in terms of the number of hours played. As of January 2014, over 67 million people played LOL per month, 27 million per day, and over 7.5 million concurrently during peak hours.

League has among the largest footprints of any game in streaming media communities on platforms such as YouTube and Twitch.tv. In September 2016 the company estimated that there are over 100 million active players each month. The game's popularity has led it to expand into merchandise, with toys, accessories as well as tie-ins to other media through music videos, documentaries, and books.

League of Legends has an active and widespread competitive scene. In North America and Europe, Riot Games organizes the League Championship Series (LCS), located in Los Angeles and Berlin respectively, which consists of 10 professional teams in each continent. Similar regional competitions exist in China (LPL), South Korea (LCK), Taiwan (LMS), Southeast Asia (GPL), and various other regions. These regional competitions culminate with the annual World Championship.

The 2016 World Championship had 43 million unique viewers and a total prize pool of over 6 million USD.

How to play:

The type of items you should buy depends on what your champion's strengths are.

- Marksmen should only look at Damage items or items with Attack Damage, Attack Speed, Critical Strike chance, or armor penetration. The only defensive item that should be built is life steal since health is being generated by the damage dealt to enemies.

- Fighters and assassins should also consider building AD, although building items with defensive stats, like Magic Resist, Armor, or Health, is recommended.

- Tank builds are similar to fighter builds, but damage items are a much lower priority than defensive items.

- Mages are similar to marksmen except instead of Damage items, Magic items, or items with mana, mana regen, Ability Power, or Magic Penetration, are the priority.

- Junglers need to make sure they build a jungler item, such as Tracker's Knife, Skirmisher's Sabre, or Stalker's Blade first before any other items.

- Finally, supports need to have a Relic Shield with them at the start of the game. The other items they build should depend on what their strengths are.

Player Base and their ranks in League of Legends.

League of Legends just hit monthly user milestone, Dota 2 just hosted one of the most successful tournaments of all time, but how do the numbers compare in 2016? The world’s top two MOBA, sharing one of the biggest markets, are often compared neck and neck by not only what type of players frequent each game, but how many players are actively playing.

In 2014, eSports enthusiast Zoe Hawkins compared the two by numbers, and today I’d like to give an update to see just how far we’ve come in two years. I’ll follow a similar structure as I feel the original post encompasses the important aspects.
