IRENA is simply short for “The International Renewable Energy Agency”. This organization is partly owned by governments and partly they are NGOs. The purpose of this organization is to support world governments in their transition to a renewable and sustainable energy future.

We can freely say that this organization acts as an international co-operation platform for technological improvements, policy harmonization, as well as financial support and resource management platform for renewable energy around the world.

IRENA was created to promote the use of all kinds of renewable energy sources, which include hydropower energy sources, bio-energy sources, ocean, wind, and solar energy to create sustainable development of our planet. The main goals are low-carbon emission, energy security in the world, energy access, and economic prosperity and growth.

IRENA - Reports

This report is important because so many eminent scientists working on it, and they created guidelines on how we should develop and what innovations we should use to achieve our goals. Of course, IRENA is not able to guarantee success, we must all work together in order to achieve our goals and create a sustainable environment. IRENA created this publication as an advice to all governments and industry leaders but IRENA is not a part of policymaking. IRENA doesn’t have the legal status in any country, region, territory, or city.

The first issue in this publication is about the efficiency of power plant operation which sometimes is not good enough. Power plants sometimes do not care about the cost of power and they supply electric networks with large amounts of electricity even though the demand is not high. This is especially true in large power plants.

Instead of energy waste, power plants should be able to reduce power production every time when power demand lowers for some reason, this can be done by existing technology built into the aggregator. Various types of technologies are used to reduce electricity wastage. Some of them are called “Smart aggregators”; these devices are fully automated and capable to reduce power wastage by 90% in many cases. Simply when demand decreases, the production also decreases automatically.

Another key issue is optimizing electric infrastructure. This will improve the participation of small producers in the network and it will bring healthy competition to the market. This will also increase the number of small production lines which can also help the whole electrical system a lot.

It is very important to allow small electricity producers to connect to the grid properly and start generating power. It is much cheaper to do so than to build a new coal power plant or even more expensive option - to build a nuclear power plant. The price of building a new coal-powered plant is between 677 and 2,100 USD per one kW of electric energy. This is a very expensive project, not to mention how much coal burning pollutes the environment.

Instead of using coal and nuclear power, we can use already connected energy resources and use aggregators to lower the financial costs of production and maintenance. By using aggregators and individual power production, we can lower the costs of production to 75 – 100 USD per one kW of electricity. This is a very tempting option for the near future.
