The concept of acquiring collective immunity started at the beginning of the pandemic in Sweden. The idea was to allow the virus to spread through the population and create collective immunity among humans. In the process, many members of the risk groups died, but most of the population acquired antibodies because they were in contact with the virus in one way or another. That was exactly the strategy of the Swedish authorities at the beginning of the pandemic. Sweden at that time had a huge mortality rate among vulnerable groups of people: older people and people with previous medical conditions.

Now, Sweden is among the countries with the fewest new cases in Europe. Of course, I do not want to promote this approach to the epidemic in any way, I am just saying that this is exactly what the rest of Europe is doing at the moment. Other European nations have also adopted this approach and we now have a huge number of people infected in Europe. Last spring when the virus appeared in Europe, everyone went to shut down and go into quarantine, but now the approach is completely different. The approach now is to allow the virus to pass through the population and create collective immunity as quickly as possible.

No one can claim that this is a good approach, and what is certain is that mortality will rise among vulnerable populations. But some experts and country governments hope this will help stop the pandemic more quickly, whether this will really be as effective as many predict remains to be seen in the future.
