The research showed that diesel vehicles that are in use today are 21% cleaner if you consider gas emissions.
The improvement in efficiency is even bigger, so now diesel engines use 27% less fuel than the same engines in 2003.
In this study they say that this improvement is achieved thanks to the improvement of “common rail” system, by implementing stop-start device and new filters for harmful materials, but also thanks to many other innovations.
Car owners, but also the whole community have great advantage from improving diesel engines in only 10 years.
Considering that diesel car sales are rising, we will be focused on innovations to make these vehicles cleaner, but also cheaper in exploitation for car owners.
The next challenge for engineers will be developing hybrid diesel-electric vehicles, which, according to many experts, can contribute reducing fuel consumption up to 40% less.
It would, combined with other improvements, help European manufacturers to achieve a goal to make all new vehicles in Europe in 2021 release 95 g of CO2 per kilometer .
