The most important choice you are going to make when starting a blog is what to write about. It just has to be something you are deeply passionate about. If not, sooner rather than later, you are going to lose interest in your own blog and all the previous efforts you made are gonna be in vain.
So give your blog a chance and write remarkable content about your passion.
Find A Killer Domain Name
For a blog to be successful, name is of the essence. You need to be creative.
If you can, keep your domain name short. Unfortunately most one word domains are taken at this point in time, but don't let that stop you, there are still plenty of good domains out there.
Free services like LeanDomainSearch or Bust A Name can help you generate domain ideas and see if they’re available. Trust me, I know – I’ve got nearly 100 domains (I may or may not have a problem). If you can, get a .com, .net, or .org. A .com is obviously preferred, but any of the top 3 are fine.
Theme
A good theme gives you the look and feel you want for your blog, allowing you to design your blog exactly how you want it to look. If you’re not a coder, then a theme makes the design work a million times easier. Plus, once you purchase a theme, which are inexpensive for the time they save you, you own it for life.
